Apply for a Library Card Today

Getting a library card is free and easy. Your card gives you access to books, digital materials, technology, programs, and more across the Mid York Library System.

Who Can Get a Card

  • Residents ages 5 and older in Herkimer, Madison, and Oneida counties are eligible for a free library card
  • If you live outside the Mid York service area, you may still be able to get a card with valid ID and a current library card from another New York State public library system
  • Some exceptions may be made on an individual basis

Don’t have a card or ID? You’re still welcome to visit and use the library while you’re here. You can use computers, Wi-Fi, printing, scanning, and faxing without a card.

What You'll Need

To sign up, please bring:

  • A valid photo ID
  • Proof of your current address (if it’s not on your ID)

How to Get a Card

Visit the Library

Stop by the circulation desk and we’ll get you set up in just a few minutes. You can also download and fill out an application ahead of time to bring with you.

Apply Online

Adults 18 and older may alternately apply for a card online. After filling out the form, you will receive a temporary 6 digit number. The temporary six-digit number cannot be used to borrow anything or use any library services. You will then need to provide proof of ID by mail, fax, or email to Mid York, at which point Mid York will issue a library card number and send a library card in the mail.

Proof of ID can also be provided at the library and a library card will be issued at that time.

Cards for Children

  • Children can get their own library card starting at age 5
  • A parent or legal guardian must sign for children under age 10
  • The parent or guardian is responsible for materials checked out on the child’s card
  • Children may not apply online for a library card
